Peace Love and the Bunkie Life….Now that the summer is winding down and we are heading into Fall, its time to reflect on this stunning project we worked on these last few months. Featured in this post is our 9×16 Mountaineer Bunkie that we put together for a customer that has a cottage out on Charleston Lake. This Bunkie was built with many upgrades according to our customers requests and our design suggestions.
From the selection of the siding to match their existing cottage, to the stunning glass railing that allows the owners to be perched up on their deck and look across Charleston Lake, this project really exhibits the caliber of our work and the partnerships with local companies we have developed along the way.
Let’s begin with the outside and work our way in. We designed and built wide comfortable steps that allow easy access to the deck that is conveniently located off the Bunkie. This not only gives your children, elderly guests and pets the ease to climb up and down while still enjoying this private space with safe passage.
We installed Premium IKO siding in the shade of Midnight Surf, which was used both on the Bunkie, but also on their existing cottage, giving a uniformed look to both buildings.
A beautiful 16 x 12 deck was built using pressured treated wood, which gives the owners and their guests a beautiful spot to sit and enjoy a glass of wine in the evening or a cup of coffee in the morning.
Both the railing and glass was custom ordered from CraftBilt from Ajax, Ontario. Over the years we have developed a great partnership with them, the quality they provide is off the charts. They cut and supply all our glass railings; this particular design has 5/8 pickets in white. Complete with aluminum railings in white to correspond with the pickets. Special attention was taken for measurements to ensure a secure and seamless installation by our crew. To finish the exterior, we chose charcoal grey shingles that will add years of protection from all the outdoor elements.
KP Building Products out of Milton, Ontario does a phenomenal job with our custom patio doors. Great time and attention are taken when ordering windows and doors as well. Both the patio door and the awning windows are supplied from this great Canadian company.
The exterior lighting was completed with a simple designed coach light on either side of the sliding door, as well as an outdoor electrical outlet.
The allure of this three season Bunkie doesn’t stop outside; inside boasts many pleasing and unique features that express the owners’ taste and our craftsmanship. A Crown Canyon fan was installed to give continuous airflow for their guests. Another small room separated by a pocket door is a quaint powder room, which gives guests both the privacy they need, but also eliminated the need to leave the Bunkie in the middle of the night. A small vanity was placed inside to provide extra storage and a space to freshen up. To finish off the look of the vanity, a Zenith Quartz selected in Nordic White tops of the sleek and inviting look.
Another specialty product we choose to use was 2 x 4 rustic pine and knotty pine that is milled and prepared by another Canadian company which are located in Gatineau, Quebec.
Pro-Pin provides locally harvested wood for a variety of wood projects, they also made the barn style pocket door. When we built the loft bed and main queen bed frame, we used their wood products. We were intentional in supporting local businesses, but were also impressed that the wood that is used is locally grown and harvested.
A small storage cabinet was also installed, topped with the Nordic White counter top to match the powder room. The cabinet was a smart addition and use of space, allowing for extra storage of blankets, or sheets was the perfect spot for a small bar fridge.
The flooring that we felt best matched both the decor but also provided durability was a luxury vinyl, in the colour Bora Bora by HydraLuxe Rigid. This is a superior product that we continuously go back to because of the quality it provides.
This certainly was a project that was exciting for us to work on. From design, the additional upgrades to seeing the integration of the finished products to completion, we are proud of the work and detail that was put into Bunkie. Sourcing and selecting high grade, yet unique materials and finishing touches, we can successfully say that our customer is very happy with the addition of their Bunkie at their cottage.
